WHY DO WE THE COSTARRICANS LOVE THE LINES?

They are in the popular places such as the Social Security hospitals (during

the visitation hour or medical appointments), Government banks, registration

days in public schools, pay day at ATM machines, National Insurance building,

bus stops during rush hour, some fast food places, confession hour at the

Metropolitan Cathedral, Civil Registry (the institution that keeps the records of

all the births, marriages, divorces, adoptions and demises in the country) and

so on.

The lines steal us time; however, throughout them we meet new friends and

even our future husband or wife. The lines are useful to read the novel Don

Quixote (obligatory reading to approve the Spanish test in High School). Also, we

have the opportunity to use the mobil phone without causing a car accident.

The gossip neighbor (like Mrs. Krabbit in Bewitched) enjoys the lines. The

hand craft that we never finish because we don't have any time, can be finished

during the hours we dedicate to the lines... even the penitence rosaries can

be prayed in the famous lines.

They are a never ending fashion and part of our ideology. We can't live

without them. Maybe one day shall be declare the National Day of the Lines. That

day shall became holiday also. There shall be cultural and sport activities

to honor the lines in this particular day. Maybe, one day not far in time,

any bar shall invent the Line cocktail or snack and even a band shall write a

song about lines. We, the Costarricans love the lines so much that called a

community The Line of the Rosary, located in the county of Desamparados, province

(state) of San José.

What would happen the day that the lines die? Would it be national mourning?

Are we going to miss them? Would we welcome the efficiency? Would I live to

see the change? We are going to tell our grandchildren about the years when

we were young and spent hours standed up to do simples things like cashing a

check? They shall look at us surprisely like when we listened to granny telling

us about how was the life in Costa Rica a century ago...
